This is a fun list of nine items and people who were born in Upstate New York and left us with some pretty amazing creations.

Dr. James Salisbury was born in tiny Scott, NY in Chenango County.  He created a health food that was supposed to aid the Union Soldiers in the Civil War who were afflicted with dysentery.  So, he gave us Salisbury steak, a school cafeteria staple as well as being one of the first items featured in frozen TV dinners.

Somebody had to invent the perforated roll of toilet paper, and the credit goes to a man from Albany.  You will see it in the gallery.

Lots of people know that potato chips were born in Upstate New York (see photo at top)..  It is one of the great stories in Saratoga.  A Native-American chef came out the winner in a culinary battle with one of the richest men in New York State.  Funny story!

And try and wrap your head around this one.  There was a time when most people cut down there own Christmas trees.  One man however came up with the idea of cutting other people's Christmas trees and selling them.  The pre-cut trees were a big hit when he first dragged a bunch of them from the Catskills down to Manhattan to sell them 150 years ago!

Yup, it is a crazy list, but all the stories are fun and fascinating!

These Items Were Born In Upstate New York! Salisbury Steak? Elmer's Glue? Who Knew?

An amazing list of 9 people and things that can call Upstate New York their birthplace. The list is crazy. Potato chips were "born" in Saratoga Springs. Toilet paper was born in Albany. How about that heavy metal object that is used in a shoe store to accurately measure your feet when buying shoes? It is on this list. And don't forget dear old James Salisbury whose legacy includes being the "Father of Salisbury Steak." Thanks, Jim! There are several other items and people on this list that will make you scratch your head and say, "Really? I didn't know that!"

Should "Sponge Candy" Be New York's Official Candy? We Think So!

There are many types of popular regional foods across Upstate New York. From spiedies in the Southern Tier to Michigan Hots in Plattsburgh, every region can boast a favorite. And, since New York State does not currently have an "official candy," we would like to nominate sponge candy for that honor. If you are from Buffalo, I know you will agree. And if you are not, you might be asking "what the heck is sponge candy?" For that group we invite yoiu to read on in this gallery!
