For many of us, there is a certain magisterial beauty in an ancient old brick firehouse.  This gallery looks at 9 historic gems.  All of them can be found in Upstate New York, from the Hudson Valley, through central New York and the Finger Lakes, and out through Western New York.

They are all waiting and/or experiencing a new life.  Some are abandoned and "looking for a new looker."  Others have magically transformed themselves over the years into the most creative new entities.  In this gallery you will see old brick firehouses (some over 100 years old) that are now a books store, or are pubs and breweries, museums, restaurants, and more.  The most fascinating thing to see is when an old firehouse is transformed into a private residence.  Gotta be the dream of a lot of guys out there.

Luckily, despite all these transformations, many of the new owners have left nuances of the past, with echoes of the old active fire company still intact.  Kudos to them!

We know that there are many more than just the firehouses on this list.  So if you know of an Upstate New York firehouse that is living a new life in some fashion (or looking for a new owner to take it into the future), please share it with us.  We encourage you to visit our Facebook page and give it a shout out.  We really do want to hear from you.

Old (Very Old) Upstate NY Firehouses Look to New Life!

This is a fun gallery. We found some very old firehouses scattered across Upstate New York. And we see what they are "up to" today. Some are empty and waiting for a second life. Some have been magically transformed into private residences. Some have been turned into commercial use, such as a brewery or coffee shop. Some are still active fire companies! But still, these old fire sentinels live on as a memory of their importance to their home neighborhoods from 50, 75, and even100 years ago.
