I am a big fan of western movies.  Have always been since I was a kid.  And I remember watching, even today, in this genre of film when the scene turns to a buffalo stampede.  I watch wide-eyed as these venerable behemoths charge across a plain, tail following tail, kicking up a cloud of prairie dust as they thunder across the screen.  Awesome.

Well, the only time I have ever seen a buffalo since then has been in a zoo.  And, not many zoos have them.  So....

I was surprised that there are five active buffalo farms scattered across Upstate New York.  There may be more, but that is what we could find.

This gallery tells you a little bit about each of them, and provides a video link so you can take a view of these animals that appear as if out of the pages of an old movie or novel.

Interestingly, these five bison ranches (or buffalo farms) are located all over the place in Upstate New York.  In small towns, like Little Falls, Savon, Chittenango, North Hudson, and Homer.  Not big places for sure.  But they have the bison and you should go and visit each one.  It makes for an amazing day trip.

Again, if you know of a buffalo farm in Upstate New York that we missed, we encourage you to visit our Facebook page and give it a shout out.  We really do want to hear from you!

Upstate New York! "Where The Buffalo Roam!" Check It Out!

Dairy farms? We've seen hundreds of them. Horse farm? Yup, a lot of them in Upstate New York , too. But how about a buffalo farm?

Believe it or not we have a bunch of them too!

A bison herd, whether they call it a farm or a ranch, is kind of a mesmerizing thing to see. The buffalo are magnificent animals, once on the extinction list in the United states. Now they are making a big come back all over America, and we found five big ones right here in Upstate New York.

You can visit these farms, see the animals, and visit the farm stores which sell a variety of products. Bison meat is very popular with a large group of people, and these farms vend buffalo meet, patties, steaks, stew meat, flavored jerky, and more.

It was amazing finding these farms in preparation for this article. I thought maybe one. Or two. But here are five that we could find, and they are located scattered around Upstate New York in tiny towns like North Hudson, and Savona.

Be sure and read each post. They have links to the farm where you can see videos of these ancient animals which (for many of us) we have only seen on an old western movie.
