The Hudson River is one of New York State's greatest treasures.  It meanders down and out of the Adirondacks (Lake Tear of the Clouds) to New York City.  The waterway is about 300 miles long.

From Albany south, the Hudson Valley offers many small towns and villages which wholeheartedly embrace their "lucky location" on this magnificent river.  There are more historic sites along the way than you can shake a Rip Van Winkle tree branch at.  From President Franklin D. Roosevelt's river-hugging palatial estate (and final resting place) in Hyde park, to the formidable cliff fortress known as West Point, there is something amazing to see around every corner of the route.

This gallery offers up a short selection of some hamlets, villages, towns, and even a small city or two which all have one thing in common.  They offer up spectacular Hudson River backdrops to this lovely little locales.

We know there are many other "special places" along the Hudson River than those here.  We include Athens, Catskill, Kingston, Cold Spring, and others.  But if your favorite Hudson River viewing place is not on our list, please give that town or village a shout out over on our Facebook page.  We really do want to hear from you.

And here is to you, oh mighty Hudson River, "America's Rhine."  We encourage all of our readers to take a road trip here this summer (or anytime).

These Hudson River Towns Offer Amazing Backdrops For Selfies!!

New York's famous Hudson river, known as "America's Rhine," is one of the pretty places in the United States. There are dozens of small hamlets, towns, and villages on the route from approximately Albany down through to New York City. The Hudson River Valley is a tourist's delight! Here is a short selection of towns in the valley that offer beautiful and special places along the waterfront. There is no better road trip in the Empire State than a three day trip along the Hudson, stopping and enjoying every view, museum, restaurant, and historic site along the way. And if you have been a frequent user of New York's Amtrak, you already know this. The rail route hugs the water all the way down. Be sure and get a window seat!

Nostalgia Alert! 11 Awesome Vintage Upstate General Stores and Five and Dime Stores

We all have memories of those great little five-and-dime stores and general stores of our youth. They were the heartbeat of our communities. They sold just about everything, you could get a pretty good meal in most of them, and of course, the showstopper was always the rows of penny candies. Upstate still has plenty of these stores around (some of them 100, 150, 170 years old!). Here is a list to start you on your trip back to the general stores of your youth. They are all great!
