Long-Awaited Hotel Planned For Downtown Norwich
At last week's annual Commerce Chenango Gala event, Commerce Chenango President & CEO Kerri Green made an announcement on behalf of the Development Chenango Corporation (DCC) that no doubt will please the Norwich, NY community and the surrounding area: Norwich will finally be getting a hotel downtown thanks to Development Chenango Corporation, which has purchased and will develop the former SUNY Morrisville building at 14-16 South Broad Street in Norwich, to turn it into a much-needed hotel.
The DCC feels strongly that a hotel would be a great asset to the community and would help to "grow, spark and develop additional economic development projects in Chenango County. Kerri Green says, “From my very first month on the job, nearly two years ago, the critical need for a hotel was expressed to me by our businesses, community members, and those who work in the tourism and event industry”.
Currently, to move the project forward, more investors are needed to cover the total cost of putting up a Norwich hotel and Commerce Chenango says there will be a capital campaign to reach that financial goal announced soon, giving local foundations and businesses an opportunity to show their support for the project. As it stands, the former SUNY Morrisville building is in need of improvements to make it more attractive to a potential developer.
The proposed project would include 45 units in a boutique-style hotel with a large meeting space and restaurant included in the plan. There's no hotel of this size currently in Chenango County, and nothing with a meeting space.
Currently, Chenango County has very few hotels and none that can accommodate the needs of the tourism industry, businesses, and travelers.
As a non-profit, The Development Chenango Corporation's mission is to create and retain jobs in Chenango County through business growth and that translates to providing start-up assistance, business planning and technical assistance, access to low-interest financing, and assistance navigating government programs and funding resources.
