So many visitors to western New York make the focal points of their vacation destinations the tourist magnets of Buffalo, NY and the legendary Niagara Falls.  Both are places one could easily spend a full weekend exploring.

But, if during that time, you find a little "lull in the action" we highly recommend a short hop north of Niagara Falls to the city of Lewiston, New York.  You will not be disappointed.

Lewiston, a city of a bit more than 15,000 residents, sits on a dramatic overlook high above the Niagara Gorge.  The main business district is small and tidy, and has everything one would need for a great day trip, from quaint coffee shops and retail stores, to museums, breweries, restaurants, galleries, and historic sites.  There is much to learn here, with a heavy influence on Lewiston's role as the final terminus for many fleeing enslaved people making their way along the Underground Railroad from the south to freedom in Canada.  The stories here are mesmerizing.

Here is a short primer on the "must sees" on your next visit to Lewiston, or even your first.  And while you are here, don't forget to ask someone about why and how Lewiston got it's nickname "The Birthplace of the Cocktail."  It is a fun story.
