Today is Juneteenth – the day to commemorate the official emancipation of African Americans throughout the United States that happened in 1865. And now Juneteenth is an official state holiday after Governor Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order this week. Cuomo said he will propose legislation next year to make it a permanent state holiday. Texas was the first state to make Juneteenth a state holiday, in 1980.
