17 Animals Neglected in Upstate NY

Ugh, another disturbing animal neglect case in Saratoga County has led to the arrests of two people after authorities say 17 animals were found without proper care.

According to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received an animal complaint on August 11th about a home on Angel Road in the Town of Corinth.

Two Arrested in Saratoga County

Following an investigation, deputies arrested 31-year-old Shannon M. Long of Hadley and 47-year-old Michael L. Bovee of Corinth on Saturday.

Both Long and Bovee were charged with 17 counts each of overdriving, torturing and injuring animals; failure to provide proper sustenance, both misdemeanors.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the pair is accused of failing to provide proper sustenance to 17 animals. The animals included dogs, cats, a hedgehog, and other species.

Authorities say two of the dogs were seized through a court order. The remaining animals were surrendered and transferred into the care and custody of private individuals or organizations.

The Home was Condemned

The conditions at the property also resulted in further action. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the residence was condemned by the Town of Corinth code enforcement officer.

Long and Bovee were released on appearance tickets and are expected to appear in court at a later date, according to the press release.

In 2010, the Albany County Legislature established the Animal Abuser Registry through Local Law K. Managed by the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, the registry was created to help protect animals and provide information to the public.

According to the registry, those listed have been convicted of animal cruelty and are prohibited from owning, possessing, residing with, or intentionally having physical contact with an animal.
