Beloved Snowman Ice Cream In Troy Receives Historic Honor

After serving up ice cream and memories for more than 70 years, Snowman Ice Cream in Troy has received a sweet honor from New York State.

The longtime Capital Region favorite has been added to the New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry. The registry recognizes businesses that have operated in New York for at least 50 years and have helped shape the identity and history of their communities.

This Truly Is A Historic Place

The Snowman has been part of Troy since the 1950s, serving hard and soft ice cream, sundaes, frozen treats and lemonade. State officials say businesses like this are often the backbone of the cities, towns and villages they serve. In The Snowman’s case, it has quite literally served generations of local families.

Ownership changed hands in 2021 when the Murphy family transferred the business to Jim Pettit and Marty Kearny of Daley Hospitality Group. However, the family connection remains strong.

Memories Go Back Decades

According to News 10 ABC, manager Samantha Murphy has memories of visiting The Snowman dating back to when she was eight years old. Her grandmother worked there for roughly 25 years, while her sister and cousins have also been part of the business.

Murphy says the historic recognition means a lot to the hardworking team behind the scenes. Even with new ownership, The Snowman remains committed to maintaining the quality, friendly service, and nostalgic charm customers have loved for decades.

Snowman Ice Cream is located at 531 Fifth Avenue in Troy. It is open daily from 1 to 9 p.m. and plans to continue serving customers through at least October, weather permitting.
