$115 Million Redevelopment Project Coming to Schenectady

Changes Coming to Hamilton Hill

Schenectady's Hamilton Hill neighborhood has been described as a "Food Desert", an area of the country that has a limited access to affordable, healthy food. To combat this, Schenectady bought a lot at 750 State St. for $950,000, and then spent a $2.75 million Restore New York grant to demolish the car dealership that used to occupy the space.

The city has also begun a cleanup project of the area, predicted to run through 2027. In addition to the State St. location, an additional nine vacant buildings on Albany Street were demolished using Metroplex funding to further the project.

What's Coming?

The anchor of the project is a new Save A Lot, a grocery chain offering private label and national brand products, meat cut fresh in-store, fresh produce and household essentials. The store is 17,250-square-feet, and will be part of a mixed-use development.

What does that mean? Well, alongside the store, 171 units of affordable housing will also be built, as well as greenspace, a playground and parking. 85 of these units will be built directly into the complex, with 86 more being placed in the Albany Street development.

This is meant to transform the area, and is planning to officially open in the spring of 2028.
