Forecasters Say Super El Niño Could Spur Significant Snow

According to Men's Journal, a Super El Niño is developing over the Pacific Ocean. This could have a significant impact on winter weather in several northeast states, including New York.

Men's Journal says an El Niño "...is characterized by unusually warm ocean temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific. It’s a natural climate pattern that occurs when sea-surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean become warmer than average."

The El Niño phenomenon usually leads to wetter, milder winters. Still, the report says it could lead to significant snow in 4 states: California, Vermont, New Hampshire, and yes, good 'ol New York.

Does this guarantee a lot of snow this winter? It does not, as we have seen El Niño winters with little snow, and some with a lot of snow. According to the Times Union, our most recent El Niño winters brought well-below-average snowfall, with 16.9 inches in 2015-16 and 31.8 inches in 2023-24. In 1997-98 and 1982-83, it was the opposite, with 52.8 and 75 inches of snow, respectively.

In a nutshell, El Niño will bring the precipitation. The wildcard is whether it will be cold enough for big snowfall.
