Upstate NY City Considering a 10 PM Curfew for Local Kids

"Do You Know Where Your Children Are?"

Remember the old TV announcement: “It’s 10 PM...Do you know where your children are?” The scary part is, I’m pretty sure there were nights when my parents heard that and thought, “Oh crap...the kids.”

For parents in one Upstate New York city, that old-school reminder could soon mean a little more. City officials in Gloversville are considering a proposed nighttime curfew for minors as the city works to address recent concerns involving juvenile activity in the community.

Recent Concerns in the Community are Growing

According to information released by the City of Gloversville, the proposed local law would apply to minors under 17 between 10 PM and 5 AM.

How the Curfew Works

Under the proposal, minors could be out during those hours for employment, school and religious activities, emergencies, activities authorized by a parent or guardian, and other circumstances outlined in the proposed law.

For now, the curfew has not been adopted, and according to City officials, the proposal gives residents a chance to review it while the community discussion continues.

The city says officials, Gloversville Police, and community partners have worked together over the past several weeks to address concerns about juvenile activity and determine next steps.

Community Meeting Scheduled this Week

Residents will also have an opportunity to weigh in.

A community meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 27 at 6 PM at the Gloversville High School Auditorium. Representatives from multiple organizations are expected to participate in a panel-style Q&A about the concerns, available resources, and possible solutions.

The big question is whether a curfew is the answer.
