Unless you've lived under a rock (literally) you probably noticed your energy bill getting higher and higher. It's one of those things that just becomes infuriating. Even when not using your electricity, the number still climbs up.

Energy Affordability Program

The New York Energy Affordability Program is insanely easy to understand. The program offers financial relief on energy bills to New York households that hold annual incomes below Area Median Income or State Median Income.

Eligible households must be below the state median income OR area median income if they are covered by Con Edison, National Grid Metro, or National Grid Long Island. You can apply and get all the information you need on eligibility and discounts at ny.gov/EAP

More Households Eligible

Currently, 1 Million households are enrolled in the program, but in September 2026, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that an extra 2.5 Million households are now eligible for these benefits.

The goal is to save households an extra $500 a year on their bills, moving it to under 6 percent of a yearly household income. The state has begun an enrollment drive that will educate and notify households if they are eligible for the program, and how they can sign up to save.

This will completely change how New York households and families see their utility bill, making it less of a burden, and allowing these families to put the money where it matters. If you're interested to see if you are eligible for the program, once again, visit ny.gov/EAP.
