Over $14 Million Awarded To Capital Region Villages For Revitalization

The Capital Region of New York may not be Manhattan, but it houses some of the most quaint and interesting towns and cities in the state.

Now, millions of dollars are being poured into these communities to ensure that they continue their stretch of excellence, and bring in new tourists and residents.

Schoharie Funding

The first to receive funding is the Village of Schoharie, with six Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) projects totaling $9.7 Million. The projects are:

• $1,844,000: Placing a new commercial space and professional healthcare facility at 218 Main Street
• $2,000,000: Building a new apartment complex at 218 Main Street
• $1,510,000: Transforming the former firehouse into a public park at 133 Grand Street
• $976,000: Enhancing and adding new community spaces at the Schoharie Free Library
• $870,000: Renovating the historic Borden’s Creamery Building into a fully accessible cultural center with modern facilities
• $2,500,000: Upgrading pedestrian infrastructure to make walking safer and more accessible.

Canajoharie Funding

The other Capital Region Village to receive funding is Canajoharie, with six NY Forward projects totaling $4.5 Million. Those projects are:

• $1,290,000: Creating an interpretive riverfront trail, green space, and public access to Canajoharie Creek
• $810,000: Reimagining White Park with ADA Compliance and new foliage
• $2,000,000: Revitalizing the former Beech-Nut factory with residencies and commercial spaces, as well as a public walkway
• $400,000: Setting aside a small project fund to provide financial and technical assistance to property owners.

This is just the beginning of New York State's goal to revitalize the Capital Region and beyond. Within a few years, the goal is to make these cities, towns, and villages as big of an attraction as the Big Apple.
