Pawsome Tescue

Shout out to the South Glens Falls Fire Company for an incredible ice rescue that ended with one very lucky, and probably very cold, cat getting a second chance.

According to the department, crews responded to a call about a cat stranded on a thin layer of ice. After assessing the situation, they deployed their brand-new Rapid Deployment Craft — also known as the “banana boat” — to safely reach the animal.

Skating on Thin Ice

The specialized craft is designed for ice and cold-water rescues, allowing firefighters to move quickly across unstable ice without risking a fall through. Lightweight yet ultra-buoyant, it surrounds rescuers with a protective inflatable barrier, making it ideal for situations like this.

Deployed the 'Banana Boat'

Using the boat, divers were able to reach the stranded cat, safely bring it back to shore, and get it the help it needed. The cat, which appeared slightly annoyed by the presence of humans, was transported to a veterinarian for evaluation, and thankfully, the rescue was successful.

Great teamwork all around — and a great example of how new equipment can make a real difference when seconds matter, and thankfully, the SGFFC didn’t let this situation get any more cat-astrophic.
