Albany Wants to Plant a Tree at Your Home… For Free!!
Unlike New York City's urban sprawl, Albany, and the Capital Region at large host a wide variety of plant and animal life. Despite the Capital needing an urban feel, the city has worked hard to allow its residents to feel at least somewhat connected to the natural world.

Now, a new project is in place that hopes to make your home more green.

Planting Trees in Albany
Alongside UAlbany, the city's Radix Ecological Sustainability Center has begun putting together a plan to make the city greener and more ecologically efficient. Starting in late March, when the ground begins to thaw, they will begin planting trees across the city of Albany.
The best part? It's completely free! The U.S Forestry Service has given the Center a grant that will allow for hundreds of trees to be planted in areas like South End, Arbor Hill, West Hill, and Sheridan Hollow. All you have to do is either provide proof you are the homeowner or show permission from the landlord to get started.
Why is This Important?
Sure, it may seem like a trivial, almost vain project. Sure, trees look good, but what can they do in your yard? During the summer, they provide well needed shade to cut down on hotter surface temperatures, as well as absorbing harmful pollutants from the atmosphere.
These trees are all native to the area, and will become a welcome piece of the city's ecological diversity, including shrubs and (on occasion) fruit trees that will provide fresh fruit during the spring and summer months.
