Carmel Police Warning Of Zoning Scams
The Carmel Police Department are warning of a new scam making the rounds across Putnam County.
In a statement shared on social media they explain that they have been made aware of a new scam where fake emails are being used to impersonate the Town Zoning Board.
The scam emails demand "fees to be paid via wire transfer." They go on to add that if you do receive this email to not reply, send payment or share any additional personal information.
On social media the Carmel Police Department goes on to ask the public that if they are contacted by these scammers to call the Carmel Police Department or the Carmel Town Building Department at 845-628-1500.
Signs That You're Being Scammed Through Email
With all of that being said, the Carmel Police Department share helpful graphics that can help victims decipher what may be a scam email.
One of the biggest scam warning signs is to check where the email is coming from. In this latest scam case emails have been arriving from:
Planning.townofcarmel.gov@usa.com.
That's not an official Town of Carmel email. The official domain, where the email comes from @TownofCarmelNY.gov.
Other signs to look out for? Unsolicited offers that sound too good to be true, links or attachments in unexpected emails and pressure to act immediately without time to think things over.
