First responders in Ulster County had their hands full on Monday after being called to respond to a report of a house explosion in West Shokan, NY.

Building Explodes in Ulster County, NY

According to a recent post on the Olive Fire Department Facebook page, it all started around noontime on Monday, March 16th, 2026, when the department was dispatched to a reported house explosion at 16 Mulrooney Road.

Olive Fire Chief Chris Winne was one of the first to arrive at the scene and, upon arrival, found a small building that had exploded, a small fire, and an individual suffering from burns. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire and transport the burn patient to HealthAlliance Hospital for treatment.

What Happened?

At this time its unclear what led to the explosion, which is currently under investigation by the Ulster County Fire Investigation Unit, according to Chief Winne. When the investigation is completed, we will update this article.

The Olive Fire Department was assisted at the scene by numerous agencies, including the Stone Ridge Fire Department, Ulster County Fire Investigation Unit, New York State Police and its Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Town of Olive Police Department, Olive First Aid, Olive Building Department, City of Kingston Medic, and the Ulster County Fire Coordinators.

Chief Winnie thanks all involved in a press release saying,

"We would like to thank all the professional volunteers and all the assisting agencies for your great work at today's incident. Without your continued dedication to the communities these incidents would not be possible to handle."
