Safety officials continue to stress the importance of wearing proper protective gear anytime you ride an ATV, including a DOT-approved helmet, goggles, gloves, boots, and long sleeves or pants. Experts also recommend riders avoid paved roadways unless ATV use is specifically allowed, never operate an ATV under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and never attempt stunts or high-speed riding.

Officials also encourage parents to make sure younger riders are operating age-appropriate ATVs and to consider enrolling in certified ATV safety training courses before heading out on the trails.
