Two Cars Crash Into Same Building in the Hudson Valley

A bizarre accident in Putnam County sent emergency crews rushing to the scene after two vehicles crashed into the same building, causing significant damage and leaving one person needing medical attention.

According to the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department, firefighters were called to 551 Route 6 in the Town of Carmel on Saturday, October 31, at approximately 3:53 p.m. for a reported two-car motor vehicle accident.

When emergency crews arrived, they discovered that both vehicles had left the roadway and crashed into the building.

The crash caused some serious structural concerns after both vehicles struck the building, taking out two support columns and compromising part of the overhead roof.

Thankfully, first-arriving firefighters were able to confirm that everyone involved had safely gotten out of the vehicles. Crews then went to work setting up temporary shoring to help support the compromised roof and prevent any further structural issues.

One Person Transported to Hospital

According to the fire department, one person was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation. The extent of their injuries has not been released.

First responders did not say what caused the vehicles to leave the roadway, but did report that traffic along Route 6 was slowed in the area for approximately 50 minutes while emergency crews worked at the scene and arrangements were made to remove both vehicles.

Once the vehicles were removed and emergency operations were complete, the scene was turned over to the Town of Carmel building inspector to assess the damage to the structure.

The Carmel Police Department and Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded to assist at the scene. Another example of the teamwork we see throughout our first responder community. Well done to everyone who responded!
