Historic Tarrytown Lighthouse Vandalized

In June of 2025, Westchester County authorities reported significant damage to the historic Tarrytown Lighthouse.

At the time  Westchester County Police shared on social media that they were investigating an "arson fire and vandalism spree." A Westchester County Parks employee found broken windows, smoky conditions and other property damages.

Sleepy Hollow Police and Fire departments were called to the scene to knock down a small fire.

The Tarrytown Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and, unfortunately, the actions of the vandals caused damage to many valuable antique items.

In a statement released back in June 2025 Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said “This was a truly despicable act, and we will do everything we can to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.”

Executive Jenkins added

“The Tarrytown Lighthouse is one of our County’s most iconic and cherished landmarks justice.”

A few days after the damage was done, 4 teens were identified and 3 were charged.

Tarrytown Lighthouse Reopens For Tours

After the evens back in June, public tours were stopped at the Tarrytown Lighthouse while officials made repairs and tightened up security.

As of Saturday April 4th, 2026, tours are officially back at the Tarrytown Lighthouse, but there are some changes.

Visitors can check out "one of Westchester County's most treasured waterfront landmarks" on curator-led tours. The Tours are free, but now, registration is required.

County Executive Jenkins said in a statement shared on April 4th, 2026:

With new security measures in place, we can continue providing meaningful opportunities that connect our community to the stories and structures that have shaped Westchester for generations.”

Registrations for tours can be made on the Eventbrite website.

History of The Tarrytown Lighthouse

The iconic Tarrytown Lighthouse was built back in 1883 and was originally built "in response to appeals from local steamship companies seeking assistance navigating the river's dangerous shoals" according to Westchester County.

It was in service for 68 years and acted as a "vital guide for Hudson River shipping" before it was decommissioned in 1961 after the Tappan Zee Bridge was built.
