What Caused The “Significant Travel Disruptions” at Westchester County Airport This Week?
Many Delays and 5 Flights Diverted at Westchester County Airport
On Monday March 16th, 2026, the Westchester County Government took to social media to share an update on the status at Westchester County Airport.
According to the post, Westchester County Airport was experiencing "significant travel disruptions."
Westchester County Government explains that the significant delays were due to "severe weather impacting the region." At the time 34% of the flights around 1 pm had been cancelled on March 16th. Delays were also "averaging 60 minutes or greater."
Additionally, there were 5 flights diverted from HPN due to the weather.

The social media post went on to say that they were "closely monitoring conditions, and working with airline partners to ensure travel disruptions are handled safely and efficiently."
Westchester County added:
Travelers are strongly encouraged to check directly with their airline carrier for the latest flight status before leaving for the Airport, and Westchester County will continue to provide updates.
As of Tuesday March 17th, 2026, morning flights from 6am until 8:00 am have been cancelled or rescheduled except for one flight to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, that boarded around 7 am.
Dangerous Weather Blows Through New York and New Jersey
The sever weather that caused the delays ranges from heavy rains to dangerous winds.
According to NBC4 New York some of the March 16th storms "could be severe and bring isolated flash flooding, along with powerful winds — strong enough to bring the threat of a tornado."
The report went on to explain that a "tornado watch was issued for nearly the entire state of New Jersey."
Obviously, the dangerous weather was a big factor in the flight delays. And Westchester County wasn't the only airport effected. Hundreds of flights were delayed or cancelled across New York and New Jersey.
The weather, however, is fitting for March. What is the saying? In like a lion, out like a lamb. March is living up to it's motto.
