
Earthquake Reported Just South of the Hudson Valley
Numerous reports have confirmed that an earthquake shook parts of Westchester County, NY Tuesday morning.
If you felt the ground move below your feet a little after 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, you weren't imagining things as a 2.3 magnitude earthquake has been confirmed in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.
Earthquake Hits Westchester County, NY
According to CBS News, the minor earthquake happened at approximately 10:17 a.m., Tuesday, with numerous residents across Westchester County reporting they felt some buildings shake and heard a loud bang.
The United States Geological Survey said the 2.3 magnitude earthquake struck about 4.5 miles below ground and that more than 900 people reported feeling it in and around Sleepy Hollow, NY, which is located about 50 miles south of Poughkeepsie, NY.
Hudson Valley Residents Report Feeling It
Numerous residents in Dutchess County took to social media to share what they felt and heard shortly after the earthquake was confirmed.
Various comments on a local community group on Facebook stated that folks in Wappingers Falls reported hearing a loud boom, describing it as hearing something similar to a loud truck driving by.

Residents in parts of the Town of Poughkeepsie reported feeling it, as did many in the area of Hillside Lake. "I felt it in Hillside Lake. I thought it was the garbage truck that had just gone up the hill and it was them emptying the pail and it was banging on the truck," said one comment.

This isn't the first time we felt an earthquake in parts of the Hudson Valley. Back in June 2024, the USGS confirmed a 2.1 magnitude earthquake in the Crown Heights area of the Town of Poughkeepsie, NY.
The Richter Scale measures earthquakes on a scale of 1 through 9, with 9 being the strongest.
