Bald Eagle Nesting Season in Full Swing Across New York State

Did you know that this time of year is consider part of the nesting season in the life of a bald eagle?

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, January through August is nesting season with eaglets "typically hatching in April and making their first flights (fledging) by mid-to-late summer,"

The DEC explains:

By 10 to 12 weeks of age, the young eagles leave the nest and spend several weeks practicing their flying and hunting skills nearby.

With that being said, it looks like local eaglets (young bald eagles) are entering the fledging and independence stage just in time for Independence Day.

Celebrate America By Catching a Glimpse of Hudson Valley Eaglets

With the 4th of July fast approaching, many Hudson Valley residents are looking for ways to celebrate America's 250th birthday.

There's no better way to celebrate America than catching a glimpse of the national bird of the USA, the Bald Eagle.

Bowdoin Park, located in the Town of Wappinger, in Dutchess County is a known Bald Eagle spot in the Hudson Valley. There's a huge nest that guests can see, high up in a tree, down a short trail.

Said nest is filled with eaglets. Dutchess County Parks writes on social media:

The Eaglets at Bowdoin Park are growing quickly and can be seen working on their flying skills on a daily basis.

The DEC claims that eagles are most active early in the morning, between 7 am and 9 am, and early evening between 4 pm and 5 pm.

For the novice bird watcher and for the professionals, the Hudson Valley is a great place to see Eagles in flight.

There are several locations that are home to eagle nests in the area and the NYS DEC keeps track of all of them on their website.

The best time to see eagles in flight in New York is during the winter months. The DEC explains why, writing "Migrating eagles arrive in December, with populations peaking in January and February when they congregate near open water to hunt."
