Was Dirty Dancing Actually Filmed in The Catskills?

Maybe it's just me, but I personally think Dirty Dancing is 100% a classic summertime movie. It's right up there with Jaws, just not as scary.

With that being said, I always knew that the movies summer vibe at the Kellerman Resort was based in the Catskills but was it actually filmed there? You the Upstate, NY is a hot spot for film these days, so anything is possible.

Unfortunately, Dirty Dancing was not filmed in the Catskills. According to Virginia.org, the 1987 classic was filmed at Mountain Lake Lodge located in Pembroke, Virginia.

With that being said, the Catskill hotel that was the inspiration behind the Kellerman Resort is now getting the spotlight.

Iconic Dirty Dancing Hotel Gets Own TV Show

Grossinger's Hotel in Liberty, New York was the place to be back in the day. It started as a small family run hotel in 1917, then turning into a bigger resort in 1919.

As time went on guest would leave the city and flock to Grossinger's in the Catskills to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It became so iconic that it has been portrayed in movies like Dirty Dancing and TV shows like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel."

Now the hotel is getting a show of it's own.

Deadline is reporting a scripted series called The Mountains is in the works written by original SNL writer Alan Zweibel and Dr. Ruth Show producer Harris F.B. Salomon.

Deadline explains The Mountains "begins on the Fourth of July weekend, 1950, when America was dancing into a new era." From there, the show will tell the story of "Jennie and Elaine Grossinger, the formidable matriarchs who transformed a humble Catskills boarding house into an empire of leisure, elegance, and resistance."

Salomon told Deadline:

"This series isn’t a reimagining.It’s a resurrection. Of a place. Of a people. Of an America that danced, fought, loved, and built something beautiful in the mountains.

Currently there is no streaming service or broadcast network behind the show or air date.

What Happened To Grossinger's Hotel?

Sadly, Grossinger's Hotel is no longer standing.

The hotel closed it's doors back in 1986, then part of it was demolished in 2018.
