Body-Worn Cameras Coming to Select Walgreens in New York
You might notice something new the next time you go shopping at select Walgreens locations across New York.
Retail Theft a Big Problem in New York
Retail theft has become a major issue for retailers across the country, and many stores are trying new ways to slow it down. Now, one major pharmacy chain is testing a new approach at select stores across New York.
Over the last decade, stores have rolled out all kinds of strategies to try to prevent theft. Some retailers have locked high-priced items behind security glass, while others have limited or changed the way customers use self-checkout lanes. If you’ve been shopping recently, you’ve probably noticed it’s a lot harder to grab certain items without asking an employee for help.
While those measures have helped in some cases, many retailers say theft continues to increase.
Now, Walgreens is trying something different.
Body Cameras Coming to Walgreens Employees
According to a report from PIX11, Walgreens has launched a new pilot program at select New York locations that will allow some employees to wear body-worn cameras while working in the store.
The cameras are voluntary for employees and are intended to help improve safety for both workers and customers. The company believes the presence of body cameras could help prevent tense situations from escalating.

A Walgreens spokesperson explained that the cameras can help "de-escalate conflicts" and create a safer environment inside stores. They also noted that safeguards are in place to protect customer privacy and ensure that the program follows all laws and regulations.
Which Stores Will Have Them?
Right now, the pilot program is expected to roll out at select locations across the five boroughs of New York City, although the company has not said exactly which stores will be included.
Walgreens currently operates more than 450 stores across New York, including over 40 locations throughout the New York City region.
Will Hudson Valley Stores Use Them?
At this point, it’s unclear if any Hudson Valley locations will be part of the pilot program or if employees at those stores will begin wearing body cameras in the future. If that changes we will update this article.
Walgreens has numerous locations throughout the Hudson Valley, including stores in Poughkeepsie, Highland, Wappingers Falls, New Paltz, and Newburgh.
