A man is facing attempted murder and several other felony charges after police say he violently attacked a taxi driver with a folding knife, stole the cab and then crashed it while trying to get away.

The incident happened early Wednesday morning, August 19, at the Motel 6 on Curry Road in the town of Colonie.

According to the Colonie Police Department, officers were called to the motel around 4:13 a.m. for a reported robbery. When they arrived, they found a male taxi driver suffering from significant cuts and stab wounds to his face, neck and arms.

During a press conference, police said if the driver didn't tuck his chin when the man allegedly tried to cut his throat from behind the driver's seat, he wouldn't have lived.

The driver was taken by Colonie EMS to Albany Medical Center for treatment. Police say the injuries were serious, but thankfully were not believed to be life-threatening.

Police Say Attack Started Inside Taxi

Investigators say the victim was working as a driver for Electric City Taxi and had gone to the Motel 6 to pick up 32-year-old Jonathan A. Tejada, of Scotia, NY.

Police allege that once Tejada got into the back seat of the taxi, he robbed and attacked the driver with a folding knife.

A struggle followed, and the driver was eventually able to escape the vehicle and get help from hotel staff, who called police.

But Tejada allegedly wasn't done.

Police say he fled the motel in the stolen taxi and eventually crashed on I-890 before reportedly taking off on foot.

Colonie police say officers quickly identified Tejada as a suspect and launched a large-scale search involving law enforcement agencies throughout the Capital Region.

He was eventually located and arrested with assistance from the Schenectady Police Department.

Colonie Police Chief James "Jay" Gerace described the attack as "gruesome, brutal and bloody," adding that the victim was lucky to be alive.

Tejada Faces Multiple Charges

Tejada has been charged with:

• Attempted Murder in the Second Degree
• Robbery in the First Degree
• Assault in the First Degree
• Grand Larceny in the Third Degree
• Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree
• Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree

Police say additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.

Tejada was arraigned in Colonie Town Court and remanded to the Albany County Correctional Facility without bail.

Police say the investigation remains active.
