Just How Long Will New York’s Iconic Plaza Hotel Be Down?
The iconic Plaza Hotel, a New York City landmark that has been welcoming guests since 1907, announced that a multiyear closure for extensive renovations will close their doors beginning in 2027.
Even if you haven't been lucky enough to visit, or even see it in person, chances are you're well aware of the history behind this NYC establishment, or at least remember it from Home Alone-2. For more than 115 years, The Plaza has been welcoming all sorts of guests, from dignitaries to celebrities and beyond.

New York's Plaza Hotel Set To Close in January 2027
On October 14th, businesswire issued a press release about the multiyear closure of the Plaza Hotel beginning quite soon, in January of 2027, with an anticipated reopening in 2031.
The four year renovation will complete 'comprehensive exterior repairs, masonry restoration, and compliance with historic preservation guidelines' for the landmark, according to People Magazine.
In the official Press Release, the Plaza Hotel management company indicated that the work requires a great amount of 'detailed planning and coordination with stakeholders' in order to adhere to historic preservation requirements.
Understanding the unique place in New York City’s architectural heritage and cultural history it holds, The Plaza Hotel is advancing plans for repair and restoration works to its landmark-protected façade. The undertaking reflects the complexity of maintaining a property of such architectural and historical significance, with careful consideration given to preservation requirements and the building’s long-term care, as well as the safety of our guests, employees, and the wider community.
What About The Condo Owners?
In addition to the guest rooms that take up some of the 18 floors of the historic hotel, there are 181 private residential condo owners in the building. During construction they will not be displaced, but will experience multi-year scaffolding on the exterior of the building, and lose the hotel-provided 'white glove' services. Condo owners have a separate entrance on 58th street to access their homes.
Aside from the 181 condominium units, there are a total of 282 guest rooms.
