Steinem, referenced as 'a defining symbol of women's movement and eloquent advocate for equality' by the Associated Press, died at age 92 on Wednesday September 2nd.

Governor Hochul, on the loss of Steinem, shared the following:

Gloria Steinem inspired generations. Fearless, witty and a quintessential New Yorker, she broke down barriers and changed what was possible for women everywhere. Trailblazers like Gloria who refused to accept the status quo paved the way for all women to dream bigger and fight for more. Her impact will be felt for generations to come. New York is keeping all who knew and loved her in our hearts today.
