A man who was working at the site of a future downtown Binghamton parking structure was injured when he reportedly became trapped under some concrete.

The incident happened at the construction site near the Boscov's department store shortly before 3 p.m. Monday.

Police and fire units were dispatched to Water Street between Court and Henry streets. Initial reports at the scene indicated the trapped man was in a roof area about 35 feet above the street.

The man apparently was freed by fellow workers within a matter of minutes. He was taken down a stairwell to Water Street where fire medics provided an initial evaluation.

The injured worker was conscious and talking with police officers and medics. He was transported to a hospital by a fire department ambulance.

Binghamton police detectives arrived at the scene to begin an investigation into the incident.

In recent days, workers have been removing sections of a closed parking garage above the store's men's department.

Most of the deteriorating parking structure was demolished in 2022 but some portions along the north side of Boscov's were left in place.

The work now underway is being done to prepare for the start of construction of a new parking garage.
