Here’s Why NYC Papers Aren’t Available in Binghamton on Mondays

Fans of the New York Post, Daily News and The New York Times aren't happy they can no longer find their favorite papers in Binghamton-area stores on Monday morning.

Convenience stores and other retailers in Broome and Tioga counties have had to advise their customers that they aren't receiving those out-of-town newspapers at the start of the work week.

Clerks and managers at area stores have been at a loss to explain why the papers are available every day except Monday. They've encountered some angry newspaper lovers over the last few weeks.

Absolute Distribution, Inc. of Scranton had provided an "important notice" to retailers that the company would no longer distribute newspapers on Mondays effective April 10. But local store operators had said they had been provided with no reason for the change.

As it turns out, the reason New York City papers aren't available on Mondays in Binghamton and Owego is due to a decision by the publisher of the Scranton newspaper.

Times-Shamrock Communications last month dropped Monday print editions for The Times-Tribune in Scranton, along with the company's papers in Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton and Pottsville.

Absolute Distribution is a unit of Times-Shamrock Communications. Its business manager said the company would lose money if it continued to truck out-of-town newspapers to places like Binghamton on Mondays.

For now, Times-Shamrock is producing print editions for the other six days a week. That means the New York City papers will be available to Binghamton area stores Tuesday through Sunday.

The Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin discontinued its Saturday print edition in March 2022. It also had dropped print newspapers for several holidays.

Gannett, the Press & Sun-Bulletin owner, is considering further reductions in its print production schedule. The company closed its printing plant near Rochester last month.

The Binghamton paper and most of Gannett's other New York publications now are printed in Rockaway, New Jersey.
