For the fourth consecutive summer, a public swimming pool in the town of Vestal won't be available for use.

The Vestal Memorial Pool on Clayton Avenue was last used in 2019. The facility didn't reopen the following year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The condition of the pool - which went into operation in May 1965 - continued to deteriorate.

Vestal officials decided the best course of action would be to construct a new pool instead of repairing the old facility.

The town last year announced that swimming was expected to resume at the site this summer but work on the project was delayed.

Vestal town supervisor John Schaffer told WNBF News on Thursday that financing had to be lined up for the planned pool.

Schaffer said the cost of the replacement project initially had been estimated at $2.6 million. The price tag now has grown to $4 million. He said the town has secured $750,000 in state funding and $250,000 in county funding for the pool replacement work.

Schaffer said the new pool will be "somewhat smaller" than the existing facility. He said bids for the job are to be opened next week.

The Vestal town board approved a $4 million bonding measure for the pool project on April 17.
