Some special exhibits and informational programs will be happening in the coming weeks at the Tioga County Historical Society Museum in Owego.

Society executive director Gerald Smith said a new exhibit is opening this week and two additional exhibits are in the works. He said monthly programs also are returning to the museum.

Smith had served as Broome County and Binghamton city historian for many years before he retired from his job with the Broome County Public Library in January 2019.

Smith became the executive director of the Tioga County Historical Society three months ago. He also remains "very involved" with the Broome County Historical Society, where he remains a board member. He also is continuing to write history columns for the Press & Sun-Bulletin.

The new Tioga County museum exhibit called "From Doll House to Our House" will open on Wednesday. The exhibit covers life around the region from 1880 to 1910.

Smith said the "doll house" includes a re-creation of a receiving parlor, a study, a dining room and the main parlor.

Later this week, Smith will present a program called "Follow the North Star: The Underground Railroad in Chemung, Tioga and Broome Counties." The program, which is free and open to the public, will be held at the Owego museum on Saturday at 2 p.m.
