Two men and two women who were walking on the shoulder of a roadway in the town of Newark Valley were struck by a sport utility vehicle.

Authorities said three of the pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene. The fourth person - a 27-year-old Newark Valley woman - was serious injured. She was transported by helicopter to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse where she was reported to be in critical condition.

According to the Tioga County Sheriff's Office, the three people who died were Newark Valley residents. They were 66-year-old John Stephens, 52-year-old Doreen Wood and 25-year-old Kurtis Acker.

Investigators said a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling south on Route 38 when it hit the four pedestrians around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday.

The name of the 18-year-old driver of the vehicle was not released by authorities. They said the driver remained on the scene after the crash and has cooperated with the investigation.

People who witnessed the crash or anyone who may have seen the black SUV traveling in the area before it struck the pedestrians may contact the sheriff's office criminal investigations division at (607) 687-1010.

The state police crash reconstruction unit and the Tioga County District Attorney's Office are assisting sheriff's office investigators.
