It was announced on December 11th that new tools are now available to assist the Endicott Police Department in investigating and fighting crime in the Village.
The Village of Endicott was awarded $770,000 in May of 2024 to fund five new tools through Governor Kathy Hochul’s New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services Law Technology Grant.
The tools include Shotspotter, several downtown cameras, in-car cameras and license plate readers, a Crime Lite Trace Evidence Scanner, and a crime scene scanner.

Shotspotter

According to the announcement, Shotspotter is an automated system that monitors and tracks the acoustic signature of a gunshot, pinpoints its location, and then notifies officers, usually before citizens place a 911 call. Officers respond immediately when the system sends the alert.

Downtown Cameras

Endicott was awarded funding to install over twenty cameras in the greater Washington
Avenue area. The cameras will cover all of Washington Avenue, the parking lots behind the Avenue, and large portions of Monroe and Broad Streets.

In-Car Cameras and License Plate Readers

Dash cameras and license plate readers have been installed in every marked police vehicle. Embedded license plate readers assist officers in locating wanted persons, stolen vehicles, and other vehicles that are entered into a “be on the lookout” type of hotlist.

Crime Lite Trace Evidence Scanner

The Crime Lite Auto Trace Evidence Scanner is for use at crime scenes, using forensic imaging with high-intensity spectral illumination at crime scenes to assist detectives with the search, detection, and capture of evidence. According to the announcement, the trace evidence scanner will assist Endicott Police Detectives with locating body fluids, fingerprints, gunshot residues, and other traces of physical evidence such as glass, fibers, and hair.

FARO 3D Crime Scene Scanner

The Endicott Police Department Bomb Squad, which is separate from the LETECH Grant, now has a 3D crime scene scanner for use at crime scenes. The system can be used for explosive recovery or post-blast sites to assist with the investigation and documentation of the crime scene and can be used for any crime scene where a 3D scan would be useful.
