Sidney Woman Pleads Guilty to Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated With Child in Vehicle

In a recent court hearing, Shelly A. Genung, a 52-year-old resident of Sidney appeared before Delaware County Court Judge John L. Hubbard on charges of driving while intoxicated with a child in the vehicle.

During the court proceedings, Genung admitted that she was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol on a public highway in the Village of Sidney. It was further revealed that she had consumed vodka before driving and had a 6-year-old child as a passenger in the vehicle.

The severe nature of the offense led to a Class E Felony charge being brought against Genung, and acting Delaware District Attorney Shawn Smith reported to Townsquare Media that Genung pleaded guilty to Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a child in the vehicle.

The sentence imposed on Genung includes five years of felony probation supervision, with a requirement to adhere to substance abuse treatment recommendations.

Additionally, Genung will be obligated to complete the Impaired Driving Program and attend a Victim Impact Panel. Her driver's license will be revoked, and she will be mandated to install an ignition interlock device in any vehicle she owns or operates.

Acting District Attorney Shawn Smith praised Officer Brendan McDevitt of the Village of Sidney Police Department for conducting a thorough investigation into the case. Smith emphasized the importance of preventing impaired driving incidents, expressing that their actions not only endanger their own lives but also pose significant risks to pedestrians and other motorists.
