Abandoned Southern Tier Pizza Hut About to Be Torn Down
A demolition crew will be setting up operations at another iconic Binghamton-area family restaurant that closed several years ago.
LCP Group of Vestal has been retained to tear down the abandoned Pizza Hut building in the town of Owego.
The blighted Pizza Hut property is located next to a McDonald's restaurant on Hickories Park Road.
Six years ago, a man who had operated a Memphis-style barbecue diner in Endicott started renovating the old Pizza Hut building. Kevin Woodard had hoped to open a barbecue restaurant at the site but his plans fell through.
The town of Owego cited the property owner - GC Pizza Hut - for multiple code violations in September 2023. The owner took no action to clean up the abandoned site.
Sara Zubalsky-Peer of the Tioga County Property Development Corporation said the owner ultimately donated the property, clearing the way for demolition of the unused building.
LCP Group of Vestal has been retained to handle the asbestos remediation and demolition of the abandoned Pizza Hut structure.
The future of the property after the site has been cleared is uncertain. Potential uses are limited because it's located within the 100-year and 500-year floodplains.
Larry Pierce of LCP Group said the demolition could get underway after NYSEG shuts off natural gas service at the site. He said work to tear down the building may start next week.
