Major Makeover Planned for Northgate Plaza on Front Street
A big renovation project is in the works for a large Broome County retail complex.
Construction on a planned multi-phase makeover of the Northgate Plaza on Upper Front Street in the town of Chenango should get underway soon.
The complex, which opened a half-century ago, is owned by a company based in Milburn, New Jersey. The firm has hired Pritchard Development Corporation to perform the renovation work.
Brett Pritchard told WNBF News the first part of the revitalization project will focus on facade work in the area of the plaza now occupied by several tenants.
Pritchard said the initial phase of the modernization job is expected to start in September. There will be two or three additional phases of the project to prepare vacant portions of the plaza for new businesses.
The owners of the complex will be working to attract more tenants to the plaza in the months ahead. A "For Lease" sign at the Northgate Plaza entrance indicates up to 100,000 square feet of space is available.
The Touch of Texas event venue and bar is one of the biggest current tenants in the plaza. Other businesses in the complex include Grande Pizza, the Small Addictions RC hobby shop and a Label Shopper clothing store.
Barker's Department Store was one of the earliest and largest tenants at the Northgate Plaza when it opened in September 1973.
A Carl's drug store and a Hills supermarket also launched operations that year at the plaza.
