New York Grocery Stores Warn Of Granola Bar & Cereal Recall
Friday afternoon (December 15) I received a call from an unknown number, As usual, I didn't answer it. Usually, it's just another robocall.
But this call left a voice mail, so I decided to check it out. Good thing I did. It was from one of the local grocery stores where I shop, informing me about a recall of a product that I may have recently purchased. Turns out I did make that product purchase.
Wegmans, Tops, and Weis markets among other grocery outlets across the country have been advising customers about this recall. The United States Food and Drug Administration announced a recall of Quaker Oats Granola Bars and Granola Cereals due to a possible health risk.
The FDA notes that the Quaker Oats Company announced on December 14, 2023, a recall of specific granola bars and granola cereals because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. These products are sold across the country as well as locally.
From the FDA recall site:
Salmonella is an an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis - U.S. FDA
The products under recall include 26 granola bar varieties, 8 granola cereal varieties, and 10 granola bar types included in various snack boxes. Some (but not all) of the varieties include Quaker Big Chewy Bars Chocolate Chip, Big Chewy Bars Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, Big Chewy Bars Variety Pack, Chewy Bars and Dipps Variety Pack, Chewy Bars Chocolate Chip and Chewy Bars Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.
