Green Mountain Electric Adding Jobs at New Kirkwood Hub
A Kirkwood warehouse facility developed by a Vermont-based company is up and running.
About two dozen workers are employed by the Green Mountain Electric Supply operation located in a 308,000-square-foot building on Pine Camp Drive.
The property had been acquired in 2019 by Canopy Growth of Canada for what was billed as a "hemp hub." That plan fell through.
Green Mountain last year chose to use the massive Kirkwood complex after it scrapped a plan to develop a distribution center in the old Kmart building in Endicott.
Structural issues at the Endicott site prompted the company to look for another location and the Kirkwood building was deemed suitable for the operation.
Warehouse manager Brad Mead said 20 to 25 people are working at the site now. He's planning to more material handlers and a second-shift warehouse supervisor.
The Kirkwood site now serves as a "wire hub," supplying items for the company's locations across the region.
Mead said the operation eventually will become a full distribution center.
Green Mountain currently is using a small portion of the Kirkwood building. About two-thirds of it is being leased by Rogers Service Group.
