With average gasoline prices inching closer to four dollars a gallon in the Binghamton area, some drivers have been finding some relative bargains at the pump.

In recent days, a pair of convenience stores in Endwell seem to be engaging in an old fashioned

The Mirabito and Byrne Dairy locations on Watson Boulevard had posted regular gas prices of $3.539 per gallon on Thursday morning.

Employees of both stores seemed somewhat puzzled about how the "price war" started. But they acknowledged that both companies closely monitor the prices of the competing station.

Car and truck drivers who were filling their tanks and gas cans also were mystified by the price break in the Endwell neighborhood.

Some said the lower prices have been in effect for several days. While they didn't know why it was going on, nobody was complaining.

Gas prices at other Broome County stations were as much as 36 cents a gallon higher than those observed on Watson Boulevard.

While the prices at the Endwell convenience stores looked like a good deal, GasBuddy on Thursday showed an even lower price at a Binghamton gas station. The Citgo station at 210 Court Street had a reported cash price of $3.509 a gallon.

A store employee said he didn't know why the price was so low but a lot of people were taking advantage of it.
