A long search for a location to develop a new well to supply the Endicott village water system has paid off.

Workers from a western New York drilling company checked several potential well sites last year.

A spot just east of the old IBM Country Club in the town of Union was identified as a good location for the well.

Mayor Linda Jackson said the village now is preparing to acquire about 5.2 acres of land just north of Watson Boulevard to develop the new supply well.

The village board has approved moving forward with the plan to purchase the site. The cost is expected to be about $950,000.

Jackson said tests conducted at the site indicate the new well will be able to provide an "excellent flow" of water with the capability of producing 2,200 gallons a minute. It's expected to take a couple of years to develop the water supply well.

Endicott has been conducting an urgent search for an appropriate well site since two existing wells near South Street in the village were decommissioned due to high iron levels. Those wells were blamed for ongoing problems with discolored water.

For now, the village is relying on the Ranney Well near En Joie Golf Club for its water supply.

The total cost of developing the new well has been estimated at $7 million. $4.3 million in state funding has been allocated for the work and the town of Union has pledged $1 million for the project.

The Endicott water system supplies residential and commercial customers in the village and in parts of the town of Union.
