Endicott Kmart: "People Shouldn't Have to Look at That Crap!"

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar wants the abandoned Kmart building in the old Endicott Plaza torn down by the end of the year.

The department store in the once-popular shopping center closed on September 7, 2011 due to flooding. Nearly 12 years later, the place remains vacant.

Green Mountain Electric Supply of Vermont acquired the property for $1 million in February. It planned to use the place as a distribution facility. But the company scrapped the project after learning the building would need expensive stabilization work.

Garnar said he was disappointed Green Mountain was unable to move forward at the Endicott site. He said the property has been "a run-down eyesore for years and years and years."

The county executive told WNBF News that while the planned project won't happen in the former Kmart building, he still wants the property cleaned up. He said he would support "some investment in actually demolishing the site" and exploring other development possibilities.

Garnar said he would like to see the building removed this year because "people shouldn't have to look at that - that crap!"

Garnar said "the good news" is that Green Mountain Electric Supply is considering other options in Broome County.

Green Mountain already has a presence in Binghamton. The company acquired Dunn Electric Supply on the city's East Side a couple of years ago.
