Broome County Man Sentenced to Prison for Arson and Harassment

Broome County District Attorney F. Paul Battisti recently announced the sentencing of Edward Monk, a 48-year-old resident of Binghamton.

Monk was sentenced on July 2, 2024, in Broome County Court to an indeterminate term in state prison for a minimum of 3.5 years and a maximum of 7 years for Attempted Arson in the Third Degree and Aggravated Harassment of an Employee by Inmate.

The District Attorney's office says the charges against Monk stemmed from two separate incidents. On December 9, 2023, Monk set fire to two trucks at a Morabito gas station on Upper Front Street, endangering property and posing a threat to anyone in the vicinity.

According to the District Attorney's office, on March 15, 2024, Monk was incarcerated at Broome County Jail and exhibited further troubling behavior. He threw a cup filled with urine at forensic workers and a corrections sergeant. This act of aggression and disrespect towards those working at the Broome County Correctional Facility was found to be unacceptable.

District Attorney F. Paul Battisti expressed grave concern over Monk's dangerous behavior, emphasizing that it would not be tolerated within the community. Battisti said Monk's actions on both occasions demonstrate a pattern of disregard for public safety and a blatant lack of respect for those who work diligently to uphold law and order.

The investigation into these incidents was conducted by the Broome County Sheriff's Office, with Senior Assistant District Attorney Alexander Czebiniak leading the prosecution for the District Attorney's Office.
