Dunkin’ Demolition: Donuts On Hold at One Southern Tier Shop
Some doughnut and coffee lovers in one Binghamton-area community may have done a double-take when they saw their favorite Dunkin' shop being torn down.
The store on Route 434 in Apalachin was demolished on Tuesday to make way for a new unit that will rise on higher ground.
Workers with Pritchard Development Corporation of Conklin tore down the old shop in preparation for the construction of a modern, smaller building.
A Broome County woman - Santina Christian - acquired two Dunkin' locations in Tioga County last month. She now is the owner of the Apalachin and Owego shops, along with units at Binghamton University and in Oneonta.
The new Dunkin' shop will have about 2,000 square feet of space. That's not quite as large as the original structure that has operated at the site since 1999.
Christian said the building will be about three feet higher than the previous store in order to meet Federal Emergency Management Agency requirements.
The new Apalachin Dunkin' store is expected to open by the end of June.
