Voting Starts After Broome Mails Thousands of Ballots
Broome County residents have started to cast their ballots - five weeks before Election Day.
Nearly 3,000 people requested absentee and early voting ballots from the Board of Elections.
Christina Dutko, a deputy election commissioner, said the ballots were delivered to a post office last Thursday after they were printed in Rochester.
Many Broome residents who had requested ballots to be mailed to them received them on Friday and Saturday.
Dutko said the Board of Elections office had not received many inquiries since the ballots were sent out. On Monday, she said "it's been pretty quiet."
Voter participation will be lower this year because there is no presidential election. Broome County voters will elect a county clerk. There are mayoral races in the city of Binghamton and the village of Johnson City. There also are many local contests around the county.
People who don't cast a ballot by mail still may vote before Election Day. Early voting this year will be conducted between October 25 and November 2.
New York State residents may request a ballot online by clicking HERE.
Voting on Election Day - Tuesday, November 4 - will take place from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Broome County is continuing to recruit poll workers. People interested in applying may contact the Board of Elections office in Binghamton.
