The first licensed cannabis shop in upstate New York is open for business in downtown Binghamton.

Damien Cornwell's On Point Cannabis was awarded a retail license by regulators in November.

The Just Breathe shop at 75 Court Street had sold hemp-derived products since the summer of 2021.

The arduous licensing process for Cornwell was completed on Tuesday with official word from the state and approval of a special use permit by the Binghamton planning commission.

Cornwell will own and operate the Binghamton store in a partnership with the Broome County Urban League.

The business will open daily at noon. It will close at 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 9 p.m. Thursday, 10 p.m. Friday and 9 p.m. Saturday. The store will be closed on Sundays.

While expressing excitement that the shop now is in operation, Cornwell acknowledged there's pressure "to do the right thing" with the state's first licensed store outside New York City.

For the first several days, Just Breathe will be selling cannabis products only to people who visit the Court Street location. It plans to launch a delivery service on February 17.

Various businesses have operated at the site of the new legal marijuana retailer. For decades, W.T Grant Company had a store in the building. The place housed a Barbara Moss clothing store in the 1990s. It also briefly was home to the Urban League's Urban Star Vintage Boutique.
