Things aren't getting any better for a Dollar General store that was ordered closed by Binghamton officials because of code violations.

The building at 68 Main Street that had been home to a CVS Pharmacy store for several years was condemned after a hearing last July.

A water line problem that caused an icy buildup on the side of the building was discovered Wednesday afternoon.

A reporter checking on the status of the site observed water flowing from a pipe near the rear of the structure. The water was freezing on the exterior wall and on a small section of the parking lot.

City firefighters were dispatched after the ice and water condition was reported. They contacted the water department.

After someone arrived to unlock the building, a "significant amount water" was discovered inside.

People who live in the West Side neighborhood near Binghamton High School were pleased when the Dollar General store opened at the Main Street site last April.

But the business was suddenly shut down after only a few weeks when more than half of its retail area was flooded following a brief downpour.

The store reopened after repairs were made. After a couple of months, code enforcement officials cited the property for seven violations. The issues listed included an inadequate fire exit and electrical problems.

Last August, a real estate agent told WNBF News that repair work was planned and he expected the Dollar General store would be "opening up in the next month or so."

The repairs were never completed and Dollar General officials have not commented on the company's plans for the site.

Although there is no indication that operations actually will resume at the Main Street store, the Dollar General website continues to show the site and indicate it's still open every day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
