Apalachin Solar Project Construction Begins
Construction work has started on a 5-megawatt solar farm in the town of Owego.
The project is being built on Route 434 in Apalachin by Farmer Brown Solar LLC. The site is located a short distance east of Forrest Hill Road.
According to plans provided to Tioga County, about 11,500 solar panel modules are to be installed for the facility. The modules will be up to 15 feet high and follow the sun's path during the day. A seven-foot-high perimeter fence will be built around the solar farm.
The solar array will be built on an 18-acre section of a 40-acre property that's being leased by the project's developers.
The land has been mostly vacant since it was cleared more than 50 years ago for construction of the Southern Tier Expressway.
Excavation work began for the solar farm this month. Equipment from Doug Gross Construction of Painted Post is at the site.
The town of Owego zoning board of appeals reviewed plans for the project and concluded it would not have a significant adverse environmental impact.
Construction of the facility is expected to take about four months to complete. It's not known when the solar farm is expected to be operational.
