New Yorkers Love a Good Wordle Challenge
If you play Wordle every morning with your coffee, you’re not alone. A new study from Preply took a deep dive into how players across the country are handling those tricky five-letter puzzles, and New Yorkers showed some interesting habits.
The Word That Stumped New York
According to the research, the word that gave New York players the biggest headache in 2025 was EDIFY. It sparked the highest spike in Google searches for “Wordle hint” here in the Empire State. If that word made you stopfor a minute, you were in very good company.
What the Study Looked At
Researchers examined Google Trends data for every puzzle of 2025. They tracked which days saw the most searches for help and which states were most likely to reach for a hint. Across the country, the hardest puzzle overall was “INBOX,” but that wasn’t the top struggle for New Yorkers. We had our own five-letter foe.

How New York Compares
While states like Maine and New Hampshire searched for Wordle help the most, New York players held their own. We looked up hints when the puzzles got tough, but not nearly as much as some of the heavy-searching New England states. And when the puzzles were easier, like “CHAIR” or “SPORT,” searches stayed low here just like everywhere else.
What It Says About Us
Wordle might be a simple game, but it still shows how we think, how we problem-solve, and how much we love a little daily challenge. And if “EDIFY” threw off your streak last year, at least you know you weren’t the only one scrambling for a clue.
